In 2006 the production of vegetables came to 527 800 tons, which meant 3.4 per cent more than in 2005. The harvested amount mainly consisted of root and tuber vegetables including pulses with 239 900 tons (+0.9 per cent) or 45.4 per cent of the whole quantity; 180 000 tons (+6.4 per cent) were leafy or stalked vegetables including brassicas corresponding to 34.1 per cent of the production; vegetables cultivated for fruit brought a yield of 108 000 tons (+4.1 per cent) or 20.5 per cent of the vegetable production.
The most important vegetables in the Austrian production, regarding quantity, are onions (18.9 per cent) and carrots (14.6 per cent), both mainly cultivated in Lower Austria, as well as salads (11.2 per cent), which are chiefly produced in Upper Austria, and cabbage (11.1 per cent), primarily grown in Lower Austria. The forth place with 7.4 per cent share held tomatoes, which for the first time ranged before cucumber production and for the most part were of Viennese origin.
