Tomato production increases and leads to lower imports

n Russia greenhouse tomato production has increased, leading to a decline in imports. The country has imported the lowest volume in the last 3 years.

 

 

 

During the 2017/18 season Russian greenhouse tomato production reached 380 000 tonnes according to data processed by ROIF Expert in its latest report. In 2017/18 greenhouse cucumber production increased by 0.2% but greenhouse tomato production increased by almost 25%.

 

 

 

This increase in production has led to a decline in imports. Thus, in January 2019, imports decreased compared to the same month of the previous year by 15.2%, totaling $79.5 million. This month recorded the lowest volume of imported vegetables in the last 3 years.

 

 

 

According to forecasts by the Ministry of Agriculture, greenhouse vegetable production is expected to reach 1.3 million tonnes this year, and 2 million tonnes in 5 years.
