The conversion to organic farming of all farms in the country can ensure the food supply of the current Austrian population.
Austria, which is already one of the pioneers of organic farming, by the number of farms and the extent of its surfaces, could provide a 100% local and organic supply according to a study.
A study by BOKU (Globalenwandel der Universität für Bodenkultur) and FiBL (Forschungsinstitut für Biologischen Landbau) has just been presented by MOTHER EARTH and GREENPEACE. The study shows that Austria could feed itself with 100% organic products.
For the authors of the study, the conversion to organic farming at national level can ensure the food supply of the current Austrian population. However, losses and preventable food waste would have to be reduced by 25% and meat consumption reduced by 10%.
The consequences would be positive for health and the environment and the economic benefits would be certain according to the authors of the study: "Agriculture is currently facing a number of major environmental and social challenges. soil sealing, loss of biodiversity and the decline of farms in the context of international competitive pressure A move to 100% organic farming in Austria would be an important and effective response to this problem. This could make important contributions to sustainable development in Austria and to long-term food security in our country ".
