A record breaking apple harvest
MD
The expected harvest will be so large that refrigeration capacity will be unable to cope in the state of Chihuahua, north Mexico on the border with Texas.
The union of producers estimates the apple crop at 500,000 tonnes - 25 to 30 million cases. The biggest harvest recorded was in 1998 with 400,000 tonnes of apples produced and 20 million cases.
The cooling capacity of the region has reached 245,000 tons which is usually sufficient, but will cause problems this year.
Producers fear market saturation and falling prices when the harvest starts in August and September.
