Spain, XXIII Expo Agro for Almeria's Agriculture
Spain
Thursday 29 November 2007
Almeria Chamber of Commerce inaugurated yesterday the 23rd edition of the specialized agricultural fair Expo Agro, which Green Med Journal is attending in these days. The president of the Andalusian government Manuel Chaves along with Almeria Chamber of Commerce chairman Diego Martínez Cano headed the opening event. Chaves also toured among the over 160 exhibitors at the fair, distributed this year on a 7,600 sqm total surface.
Earlier yesterday morning, Mr. Martínez Cano signed two cooperation agreements with representatives of the Chamber of Commerce of Antalya (Turkey) and Puebla-Txcala (Mexico), aiming at favouring exchanges between the Countries. Chairman Martínez Cano also welcomed the foreign operators forming the international commercial delegations visiting Expo Agro this year from thirteen Countries, among which Mexico, Turkey, Kenya, Tanzania, Chile and Italy.
In the previous days, the commercial delegations visited some companies, greenhouses and research centres of the area.
Greenhouse intensive vegetable cultivation is typical of Almeria (covering a total surface of 27,500 ha) and very important to the area’s economy. In recent years the province is investing a lot on integrated agricultural systems, which has recorded a real booming since last year -passing from 1,200 ha in 2006 to 11,000 this year.
In his speech the president of Andalusian government Manuel Chaves congratulated Almerian farmers for this achievement and their “ability to change”, highlighting that “they expect to reach 100% integrated cultivation in all Almeria’s greenhouses in next few years, which means better competitiveness on European markets”.
Today Almeria Chamber of Commerce will sign two further collaboration agreements with international advising companies, which will become supporting desks abroad for Almerian companies. These will be first established in Turkey and Kenya.
