In Spain, the area devoted to organic farming has grown from 1.8 million hectares in 2012 to more than 2.67 million in 2022, which constitutes almost 11% of total agriculture. This agricultural approach renounces the use of pesticides and chemicals, favoring natural techniques and care for animal welfare.
According to experts from the Union of Small Farmers and Ranchers (UPA) and the Spanish Society of Organic Agriculture and Agroecology (SEAE), the increase in production of more than 25% in five years reflects a growing demand for products free of chemicals and genetic modifications. The terms ecological, bio and organic, which refer to these products, imply farming practices that preserve soil health and avoid synthetic pesticides.
Andalusia leads national organic production, followed by Castilla-La Mancha and Catalonia, with Catalonia and the Valencian Community also contributing significantly. The most common products under this method include cereals, nuts, and vegetables.
Although the higher price of these products may limit their consumption, external demand, especially European, keeps the sector alive. Domestic spending in Spain on these products is low, with an average of 64 euros per person per year, highlighting the need to encourage local consumption and education about their benefits.
Finally, organic agriculture faces regulatory challenges, especially in comparison with international standards, highlighting the importance of harmonizing standards to ensure fair and sustainable practices.
