China increases its imports of bananas

Good news for Philippine producers : China increases its demand for bananas.

China was affected by Typhoon Yolanda and its banana production has suffered severe damages, nearly 80% loss in the regions of Hainan and Guangzhou. Nearly 300 000 hectares of bananas were destroyed. The island of Taiwan was also affected, which leads to an increased demand for bananas from the Philippines.

FEDCO, the federation of cooperatives in Mindanao, notes the increase in Chinese demand. Shipments are multiplied, especially since the navigation is easy, 3-5 days of travel are required  for bananas to arrive at their destination. Prices remain and Philippine producers, after recent unlucky years (various diseases, typhoon Pablo), believe that Chinese demand will continue to increase in 2014.
