The Region of Murcia is the first artichoke-producing region in Spain, which forms 40% of the national production.
In turn, Spain is the second world producer of this vegetable, whose annual production exceeds 220,000 tons.
This was reported by the Spanish Artichoke Association last week, during the celebration of the second production peak in Campo de Cartagena, a region that produces 60% of the regional artichoke total.
Similarly, they pointed out that Murcia is the largest artichoke exporter in the country, which accounts for 65% of national exports.
They specified that the main destinations for the Murcian vegetable continue to be France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
The peaks in artichoke production are the harvests and subsequent collections of the crop that are made from the same plant in one campaign. In Spain, there are two peaks: the first at the beginning of autumn and the second before spring.
