Apple production in Santa Catarina to exceed 570 thousand tons in 2023

Santa Catarina, the largest apple-producing state in Brazil, expects a production of 570,800 tons this season, according to the Brazilian Association of Apple Producers (ABPM). This figure represents more than half of the total production of said fruit in the country. Growers are expecting a harvest of excellent quality due to the favorable climate.

 

Santa Catarina is part of the only region in the world to eradicate the codling moth (Cydia pomonella), considered the worst insect pest for fruit growing. Thanks to the efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA), the Integrated Agricultural Development Company of Santa Catarina (CIDASC) and the farmers, Cydia pomonella remains kept away from the state for almost 10 years now.

 

The main varieties produced by the state are Fuji and Gala.
