According to a British consultancy, in ten years the supermarkets’ shelves may host greenhouses for fruit and vegetables.
Fruit and vegetables to be picked up straight from the plants among supermarkets’ shelves: this may be the outlook in about ten years, according to the British consultancy firm Futurlab.
The Italian scientific magazine Focus reported that the realization is being studied of a kind of greenhouse that may replace the traditional fruit and vegetables aisles in supermarkets, a sort of “hydroponic” shelf.
Customers will just have to pick the products they need from the plant, check the weight and go to the cashier.
According to Lucy MacLennan, technical manager of Sainsbury’s, “this solution will raise the products’ quality and will also be ecosustainable, considering the current high prices of fruit and vegetables for transport and packaging.”
This will allow a reduction of both waste and harmful emissions.
