Spain buys more Peruvian fruit and vegetables than ever before

Early-season Peruvian grape imports may drive down local prices.
In 2024, Peru became the third largest supplier of fruits and vegetables to Spain, surpassing the United States and trailing only Morocco and France, according to the Spanish Ministry of Economy.
Growth continued in January 2025, with exports of 52.12 million euros, where grapes accounted for almost half of the total (25.15 million euros), tripling the value recorded in the same month of 2023.
This increase worries the Spanish production sector. Although imports arrive outside the local campaign, farmers fear that the Peruvian product enters the national harvest months, putting pressure on prices.
According to COAG Totana, producing grapes in Spain costs twice as much as in Peru, making it difficult to compete. They also point out that, if shipments are maintained year-round, the impact on the European market will be greater.
In 2024, Spain imported more than 2,000 tons of Peruvian grapes. Spanish producers who start the campaign in August have already detected price drops.
The risk, they warn, is that imported fruit will coincide with national production and reduce the profitability of the local crop. They ask to closely follow the behavior of the market to avoid further damage to the sector.
