A promising variety which could give an advantage to New Zealand on the Southern hemisphere market...
A new variety of kiwi could give an advantage to the new-Zealand exporters.
Summerfruit, developed in Italy, is cultivated for the first time in Kerikeri (Northland).
Available approximately 4 weeks earlier than the traditional variety Hayward, this one would allow the New Zealand exporters to be in advance against competitors from Southern hemisphere.
Turners and Growers consider that the variety has an annual potential of export of 12 million trays, what would make 84 million dollars a year for the New Zealand kiwi industry.
Summerfruit will be in commercial production next year.
