Peru’s Hass avocado sector nears a new production milestone
VU
Peru remains the world’s second-largest exporter, after Mexico.
Peru’s Hass avocado industry has expanded at an exceptional pace. In 1999, when ProHass was founded, the country had just 2,000 hectares of Hass planted and exported 479 tonnes. Twenty-six years later, the crop covers 84,000 hectares and exports have climbed to 692,000 tonnes, according to ProHass president José Antonio Castro.
He noted that Hass is now one of Peru’s largest agro-export crops, supported by over 30,000 producers and 69 packing facilities dedicated to processing and shipping. Peruvian avocados are currently sold in 70 markets, with Europe, North America and Chile as the main destinations. Markets such as Mexico, Taiwan, Vietnam and Australia remain untapped opportunities.
Castro added that the industry should not focus solely on Southeast Asia, pointing out that South America is fully open and holds strong growth potential.
With 84,000 hectares already planted, Peru is on track to reach one million tonnes of exportable volume in the coming years. Castro stressed the importance of strengthening consumption and maintaining market access to ensure long-term sustainability for the more than 30,000 growers involved.
