Ukrainian garlic varieties thrive in Spain’s climate

Ukrainian garlic varieties are showing remarkable adaptability in Spain, performing even better there than in their home environment. According to agricultural specialists, shooting varieties developed in Ukraine respond extremely well to Spain’s mild conditions, producing more leaves and forming noticeably larger bulbs.
Experts note that Ukrainian garlic in Spain can develop up to 14 leaves, compared with 7–8 leaves typically seen in Ukrainian fields. The warmer climate and absence of winter stress also encourage the formation of additional inner cloves, a feature that rarely appears under Ukrainian growing conditions. By contrast, in cooler regions such as Germany and France, these same varieties shoot only partially.
Specialists emphasise that while Ukrainian garlic performs strongly in Spain, the reverse is not true. Varieties originating from warmer, non-shooting types do not adapt well to Ukraine and generally fail to meet production expectations. The observations reinforce the idea that garlic relies heavily on zoning and “genetic memory,” meaning each country’s varieties are best suited to their native climatic conditions.
