Germany’s most successful entrepreneurial initiative
The success of the cooperative Edeka Group is built on the strong collaboration between 3,200 independent retailers and seven regional wholesale companies.
In 2024, Edeka achieved a turnover of €75.3 billion, operating around 10,900 stores and employing approximately 413,000 people. A key driver of this success is the entrepreneurial spirit of the 3,200 independent retailers who give Edeka its unique identity. They are supported by seven regional wholesale companies that deliver fresh goods daily and assist them with everything from sales to expansion. Strategic direction and group-wide initiatives are coordinated by the Edeka headquarters in Hamburg.
“We Love Food” Campaign
The successful “We love food” campaign for 2025 was launched last March and provides strong momentum for the implementation of cross-network goals. Edeka continues to set successful trends in the discount segment through its subsidiary Netto Marken-Discount, as well as through specialist retail formats such as Trinkgut, Naturkind, and Budni, and via its cooperation with the online delivery service Picnic. The group’s bulk consumer division, Edeka Foodservice, further expands the comprehensive portfolio of services offered by the company.
Focus on regionality and partnerships in 90 countries
Edeka Fruchtkontor, which coordinates the procurement of fruit and vegetables across the group, focuses deliberately on direct sourcing from over 1,000 partner companies in around 90 countries, bypassing intermediaries or importers. Around half of all agricultural suppliers are based in Germany. Fruchtkontor supplies fresh produce daily to the logistics centers of the seven regional wholesale companies and to Netto Marken-Discount. At store level, independent Edeka retailers tailor their assortments to local customer preferences and also cooperate with nearby producers, strengthening regional supply chains.
Award-Winning Fruit and Vegetables Department
Edeka once again won the 2025 German Retail Award for the fruit and vegetable category, presented by Fruchthandel Magazin during the German Fruit & Vegetable Congress in Düsseldorf last September.
The award is based on a representative consumer survey conducted by the market research institute YouGov Shopper-Panel FMCG, covering more than 6,500 households. Retailers were evaluated on criteria such as freshness, assortment, presentation, service, and confidence in food safety.
Markus Mosa, CEO of Edeka Zentrale Stiftung & Co. KG, accepted the award. The group was recognized for its extensive range of regional products and its popular private labels Gut&Günstig and Edeka Herzstücke. These brands stand for variety at fair prices and include numerous products grown according to particularly sustainable standards, helping support environmental and climate protection across the fruit and vegetable supply chain.
