Novelty X-Ray sorter for improved control in frozen cherry industry

TOMRA, a provider of state-of-the-art technology, has launched the TOMRA 5X, an X-ray sorter that inspects and classifies the flow of products based on their internal structure to ensure a quality product. This machine is a big step forward for the frozen cherry industry, particularly for pitless cherry production lines, where detecting and expelling pitted cherries is a significant challenge.

According to César Estrada, Area Sales Manager at TOMRA in Chile, the difficulty is that the density of the stone and the cherry are similar. But the problem was solved thanks to the latest advances in image processing algorithms.

The TOMRA 5X incorporates advanced hardware and software that processes images at high speed. It can analyze each cherry and detect the empty space generated in pitted cherries. If this space is not visible in the image analyzed by the workers, the TOMRA 5X classifies it as "product to be discarded" and rejects it individually, without loss of good product. Additionally, the machine can detect foreign bodies such as stones, glass, metals, rubber, and high-density plastics, making it useful for other applications such as the classification of frozen berries to optimize the quality of the final product.

TOMRA Food has a wide range of solutions for the frozen berry segment, including the TOMRA 5B and TOMRA 5C. The TOMRA 5B is suitable for very sensitive IQF fruits such as raspberries, minimizing fruit breakage during processing. The TOMRA 5C is ideal for IQF berries in general, especially in the blueberry segment. With BSI+ technology, it can detect the biometric characteristics of the fruit, making it possible to find the dried blueberry, something that no other technology can do with such high efficiency.
