The country approved a new technical standard for fresh spinach, setting strict rules on quality, safety, packaging, and labelling to protect consumers and boost the crop’s competitiveness in local and international markets.
Peru has approved a new technical standard to ensure that fresh spinach sold in the country and abroad meets strict quality and safety requirements. The rule, called NTP 011.710:2025 “Spinach,” was issued by the National Institute for Quality (Inacal), part of the Ministry of Production.
The standard defines how spinach should look, taste, and be presented for human consumption. It must be healthy, fresh, clean, and free of soil, pesticides, or visible damage. The guideline also ensures that spinach can withstand handling and transport until it reaches the final consumer.
Spinach is classified into two categories. Category I allows only up to 10% of a lot with minor defects and a maximum of 1% with serious damage. Category II also permits up to 10% with defects, but no more than 2% can show clear damage. The rules also limit the percentage of loose leaves in each batch.
For traceability, packaging must clearly state the product name, country and region of origin, variety, commercial type, and size. Labels are required for both retail and wholesale trade, with containers designed to protect the spinach during transport.
Inacal stressed that the measure not only protects consumers but also supports farmers, exporters, and agribusinesses by raising competitiveness in international markets.
