President Hu Jintao pledged to continue pushing for rural reform during a trip that ended yesterday.
« We have to develop modern agriculture to raise the comprehensive production capacity of the agriculture sector » he said.
One expected new reforms to be taken during the next Communist Party’s Central Committee organised next month.
The current system of collective ownership of land has been long criticised, thus affecting the output. Hu Jintao stated while visiting a grape farm yesterday that « the household contract responsablilty system was a pratical and viable path »
Under this system, production and management are entrusted to farming housholds through long-term contracts. During the contrat, farmers pay taxes to the state and give a part of the produce to local government. The rest of the produce is theirs.
With a rising inflation and rising concern over agricultural production, specialists agrree to focus on new technologies to boost production.
