Reducing nearly a third of vegetable production in 2100 alert scientists who advocate new cultivation methods and varieties more resistant to drought.
If global warming continues at the current rate, scientists predict for 2100 a rise in temperatures of 4 ° C which will result in a 31.5% reduction in vegetable crops.
The study published in PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA) shows that warmer air masses and less water resources will reduce vegetable and legume crops by 31.5%. The areas most affected by this phenomenon will be southern Europe and large areas of Africa and South Asia.
For this analysis, scientists compiled 174 studies from around the world that examined the different environmental impacts on crops since 1975.
"We have compiled for the first time all the available evidence of the impact of climate change on crops and the quality of vegetables and legumes. If we continue as if nothing had happened, climate change will significantly reduce the overall availability of These important foods need urgent action, including supporting agriculture that is more resilient to climate change, and this must be a priority for governments around the world, "the study authors said.
