The state of Michoacán (Mexico), renowned for its avocado production, reported 480,944 tons in the first quarter of 2024, marking a slight decrease of 10.5% over the previous year, according to SIAP data. Although Michoacán leads with 81.2% of national production, Jalisco follows closely with 96,370 tons, experiencing an increase of 3.5%.
Both states are important exporters to the United States, complying with rigorous phytosanitary and quality standards. Other states such as Guerrero, Estado de México, Nuevo León and Veracruz also contribute to national production, although to a lesser extent.
In Michoacán, Tancítaro stands out as the main municipal producer, followed closely by Ario, Salvador Escalante, Tacámbaro and Uruapan. With 68 municipalities dedicated to avocado cultivation and 175,000 hectares cultivated in 2024, the state is a mainstay in the industry.
For export, 55 Michoacan municipalities are certified, backed by 97 packages endorsed by Senasica and USDA. Jalisco, meanwhile, has 79 producing municipalities and 17 certifications for export.
Michoacán's production in 2023 totaled close to one million tons of avocados, while Jalisco contributed half of its production to the international market. During the Super Bowl, Mexico shipped 138,000 tons of avocados, mainly from Michoacán.
