Germany: Area and volume increasing for mushroom production

According to data from Destatis, the Federal Statistical Office, mushroom production in 2020 increased, both in area (+ 4%) and in volume (+ 10%).
Destatis, the Federal Statistical Office, indicates that the area harvested in 2020 in Germany for mushroom production reached 358 hectares, a change of + 4% compared to the previous year. About 16% of these harvested areas were fully organic.
In terms of volume, 77,000 tonnes of mushrooms were harvested from farms with at least 0.1 hectare of production area. Production increased by almost 10% compared to 2019. The total harvest volume of edible mushrooms in Germany amounted to a total of 78,700 tonnes.
With a share of 98%, white and brown mushrooms accounted for almost all of German production. The remaining volume consisted of oyster mushrooms, shiitakes and other special varieties of mushrooms.
Large-scale mushroom production in Germany takes place in 9 federal states. The state of Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony) has the largest harvesting area in the country with 174 hectares.
