Peru sends first banana shipment to China

Peru shipped 20 tonnes of bananas to China on July 23, marking the country’s first commercial consignment to the market, according to the National Agricultural Health Service, SENASA.

The shipment was prepared at the UPO packing plant in Olmos, in the Lambayeque region. It followed the implementation of phytosanitary requirements agreed between Peru and China.

SENASA said every lot must come from certified and inspected farms. Packing facilities must also meet the bilateral protocol, providing full traceability and ensuring that shipments are free from regulated pests.

Peru exported close to 140,000 tonnes of bananas in 2025. The Netherlands was the largest destination with 45,600 tonnes, followed by the United States with 44,600 tonnes. Other markets included Italy, Belgium, South Korea and Japan.

Piura accounted for 80% of national shipments, or around 112,000 tonnes. Lambayeque contributed 22,000 tonnes, while La Libertad supplied 6,400 tonnes.

Access to China gives northern growers another destination and reduces their dependence on existing European and North American markets.
