The archipelago of the Canary Islands has seen a dramatic increase in its areas dedicated to avocados, which increased from 815 hectares in 2007 to 1287 hectares in 2015.
In the archipelago, the islands where the cultivation of avocados is the most extensive are La Palma and Tenerife with respectively 595.3 hectares and 473.4 hectares. Then Gran Canaria which has 181.6 hectares, La Gomera 19.6 hectares, El Hierro 17 hectares and Lanzarote 0.5 hectares.
For a long time, the production was destined for the domestic market, but the increase in the area resulted in a production which allowed the different external markets (Spain, France, Cabo Verde) to be touched. To reinforce and prolong this growth, professionals in the sector are considering the adoption of a quality label.
