According to a survey of 2017, there were only 5,021 hectares certified organic on the 42 million hectares cultivated in the country.
In Nigeria, the agricultural sector accounts for 24% of the country's GDP, and experts believe that efforts focused on the development of organic farming will lead to an improvement in the economic situation.
For experts Nigeria's agricultural sector needs to reposition itself and choose to strengthen its organic farming. This will attract more investment in the country, resulting in increased job creation and increased agricultural production, as well as food security and better exports as international demand for organic products is supported.
Associations and private sector companies are asking the federal government to support all initiatives to develop organic farming.
