Friday 25 June 2010
Pineapple production in decline with a summer crop decreasing of 50 %.
Pineapple production in Thailand is lower than previously estimated, resulting in the crop failure with the lowest harvest in the last 5 years.
The pineapple processor Group of Thaï Food Association declares impact of El Niño on the summer crop 2010. It raises the land temperature as well as reduces the amount of rainfall. The Thai Government has been issuing the warning of the El Nino since the end of last year.
The average rainfall in January – April 2010 compared to the same period of the year 2009 has reduced in all regions across the country by 57%. Irrigation water will be insufficient to supply agriculture.
With the forecast of late rainy season, winter crop is expected to be delayed in November/December 2010 and the volume would be smaller than the same period of last year.
