Available in commercial volume for the first time in 2022, on the New Zealand market and on several Asian markets (Singapore, Japan, China), the red flesh kiwifruit offered by Zespri will have a new name.
Zespri has announced that its red kiwifruit will be named Zespri RubyRed ™ Kiwifruit for the 1st year of commercial volume sales in the upcoming 2022 season.
Initially marketed since December 2019 under the name Zespri Red during sales trials, Zespri RubyRed ™ Kiwifruit will be available in commercial volumes for the first time in 2022 in New Zealand, Singapore, Japan and China. In 2021, volumes sold totaled 70,000 trays, volumes should reach around 250,000 trays in 2022.
"The consumer response to our limited sales trials over the past 3 seasons has exceeded expectations and suggests that Zespri RubyRed ™ kiwifruit is able to attract new, younger consumers to the kiwifruit category, complementing our offering." said Jiunn Shih, director of development at Zespri.
"The shorter shelf life of Zespri RubyRed ™ kiwifruit compared to Zespri SunGold and Zespri Green has made us prioritize our Asian markets given the shorter ocean transit times," said Mr. Shih.
Zespri RubyRed ™ kiwifruit will be available to consumers in New Zealand, Singapore, Japan and China from March through the end of May 2022.
