The association Mesa Nacional del Ajo reports clear signs of paralysis with a triple drop observed (domestic demand, prices, exports)
Falling exports, declining domestic demand has left the industry is on the verge of garlic paralysis.
The association, Mesa Nacional del Ajo, reported a price drop of 21.84% in H1 2012 compared to the same period last year. Domestic demand fell due to the economic crisis in the country.
Exports have slumped both in volume
and price. Shipments to France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Poland and Romania have declined while the average price fell from € 2.50 / kg in 2011 to 1.90 € / kg this year.
The association believes that recovery could begin. The supply from China will be at a much higher price than in the past and imports should fall.
