Italy

Southern Europe and the Mediterranean represent a business of almost 8 billion euros, comprising 900 million consumers for the constructors of packaging machinery. It is because of these figures that the Mediterranean region has been selected as a reference market by the exhibitors of Ipack-Ima, triennial exhibition of the sector, scheduled for March 24 to 28, 2009 at Fiera Milano. That’s why a road show in some main Countries of the area (Turkey, Egypt and Morocco) will start in the autumn preceding the event in Lombardy´s main city - the organisation staff explained presenting some novelties of the forthcoming edition of the exhibition. In general, the sector of machinery and transport material is the first exports field of Italy in the area (in 2007 it accounted for 37.1% of the total, according to data of the Milan Chamber of Commerce). Guido Corbella, chief executive of Ipack-Ima SpA, which organises the exhibition, explained: “The industries of the packaging sector export some 90% of their production and aim at increasing their market share in the Mediterranean”.
1,500 exhibitors participated in the past edition in 2006. At the moment about 800 exhibitors already registered at the fair, that is 60% of the available exhibition surface.
During Ipack-Ima 2009, an interesting international seminar will focus on how food processing and packaging technologies can favour the reduction of food wastes and limit the problem of starvation worldwide. “In emerging Countries - Guido Corbella explains - up to 60% of food wastes are caused by lack of technologies, in packaging for transport for instance”. Buyers’ delegation from Countries selected by FAO will attend the Milan’s event in March 2009: India, Brazil, China, Russia, where there are funding programmes to develop this kind of technologies. The UN organization (along with others such as UNIDO, IFAD and PAM) actually patrocinates the seminar together with the Italian Agricultural ministry.
