Quick Commerce: A Growth Driver for Carrefour
Online sales with fast delivery are evolving from a niche trend into a key growth driver for retailers like Carrefour that are investing in this area.
Sara Subirón, Quick Commerce Manager at Carrefour Spain, noted during the 28th AECOC Congress that the Carrefour group accounts for 1% of Spain’s GDP. It has 53,000 employees, more than 200 hypermarkets, and 1,600 stores. It spends 9.7 billion euros on purchases from suppliers, of which €7.9 billion goes to local suppliers. Purchases of fruits and vegetables are made through the subsidiary Socomo in Valencia.

The rapid delivery service operates within a 3-kilometer radius of each store. The group has over 500 Carrefour hypermarkets, Carrefour Express, Carrefour Market, and Carrefour City stores in Spain. According to Sara Subirón, Q-commerce fulfills four new shopping needs: it replaces restaurant delivery, satisfies a craving or social occasion, addresses an urgent need or a forgotten item, or simply serves as an express restocking option to complement monthly shopping, particularly for perishable goods. “Gen Z and Millennials are driving the instant shopping revolution, with 70% of shoppers under the age of 35,” reports Sara.
