A new crop in Zimbabwe, blueberries continue to perform remarkably well in terms of both production and export volumes.
Local media report that, according to a crop assessment report from the Ministry of Agriculture, this year's blueberry harvest is set to grow by +69% in volume. This is the highest growth rate of any crop in the country, far ahead of pecans (+43%) and apples (+29%).
The expected volume could further boost blueberry exports to 7,000 tonnes this year.
Mainly exported to South Africa, the UK and the EU, Zimbabwean blueberries could soon enter China. The industry hopes to obtain Chinese approval shortly. China has already authorized citrus exports (oranges, mandarins, grapefruit, limes) from Zimbabwe.
