Peru aims to become the largest world exporter of avocado in 10 years due to the continuous increase in production.
Peru plans to become the largest exporter of avocados in the world within 10 years, according to the Ministry of Foreign Trade. Peru may succeed by 8 or 10 years, due to the increase in production and quality of its offer.
Peruvian production increased by 17% between 2009 and 2010, reaching 184,370 metric tons (MT). Peru is currently the seventh largest producer of avocado with 4% of total production
. The avocado is a non-traditional product, like cocoa and organic coffee, which is increasing its exports .
Peru is still far from Mexico, the largest producer of avocado in the world with 1.23 million tonnes in 2009 (representing 32% of world production), Chile 9%, the U.S. 7% and lndonesia 7%.
