In Madagascar, the 2022/23 litchi campaign started slightly later than the previous campaign with the official start of harvesting on November 22, 2022.
For this 2022/23 campaign for litchis from Madagascar, around 14,280 tonnes were exported to their main destination: the European market. This represents a slight decline (-1.99%) compared to the 14,570 tonnes exported the previous season.
The bulk of these exports were transported by sea and the volume shipped by air is estimated at around 100 tonnes, an amount lower than the 240 tonnes shipped by air in the 2020/21 campaign.
According to the CTHT (Horticultural Technical Center of Tamatave) the campaign can be considered a good season. While at the start of the season in the European markets, the context was described as gloomy, the Malagasy litchi benefited from a good reception of the product on the part of distributors and consumers and was positioned favorably in relation to its main competitor, the South African lychee which recorded some quality problems.
