Galeries Lafayette to buy M&S

France's department store chain, Galeries Lafayette, may win the 18 Marks & Spencer stores up for sale in France against its rivals Wal-Mart (USA) and Fast Retailing (Japan). M&S could favour a French buyer to avoid conflict with French labour unions, which have protested against the planned closure.
