The World's first free Interactive Map “knows” when it’s time to harvest!
For years, growers have developed their own proprietary ways of determining the optimal time to harvest their crops. Fortunately Felix Instruments- Applied Food Science has developed the F-750 Produce Quality Meter. This instrument allows growers, packers, and scientists to objectively gauge the maturity of fruit. Using non-destructive NIR spectroscopy and commodity-specific chemometric models the F-750 measures important quality traits like Dry Matter and Total Soluble Solids (brix).
Felix Instruments owner, Leonard Felix, met with Fructidor at PMA Fresh Summit in New Orleans to share with us his view on the fresh fruit business and on using the F-750 Produce Quality Meter and Fruit Maps for determining harvest time.
Leonard explains: “Felix Instruments products are designed to provide useful data at each stage of fruit production, from crop management, to pack house or on-truck inspection as well as long term storage. Felix Instruments Produce Quality Meter makes the harvest, ripening, handling and storage of fruit more efficient so that the each fruit can be harvested, handled and sold just as it reaches it’s maximum potential.”
The F-750 Produce Quality Meter was originally developed and designed for mangoes but now has a range of starter models for other fruits such as avocados, apples, kiwifruit, pears, grapes, and cherries.
He continues: “Before the end of the year we will launch Fruit Maps, the first free of charge Interactive Harvest Map. By optimizing crop management and harvest timing, Fruit Maps can drastically reduce waste and increase profits for commercial growers. It is in its final development stages and exists as a website enhancing the value of the F-750 Produce Quality Meters. We are also investing resources to allow Fruit Maps to operate as a phone app, allowing farmers to view data whether they are at home, on the road, or in the field.
Felix Instruments – Applied Food Science’s product line includes both Produce Quality Meters as well as Gas Analyzers specifically those measuring ripening gasses such as ethylene. The equipment is in use world-wide with the highest demand in USA, Australia, South Africa, Netherlands, Spain, Germany and France.
