African not consume enough fruit & vegetables
MD
The UN Agency for Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Dakar organized a symposium where scientists have found that Africans do not eat enough fruits and vegetables.
In Africa, average consumption of fruit and vegetables per person is below the WHO recommended dose of 400 grams.
Changing lifestyles and urbanization have changed eating habits. In most African countries, half of the population could be considered overweight, what lead to the development of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In Ethiopia, nearly one third of deaths in 2005 were attributed to these diseases. In Senegal, the cases of diabetes were multiplied by 10 in 30 years.
Africa suffered a "double burden" with under-nutrition and obesity. Scientists have called for better agricultural policies and the increase of fruit and vegetables consumption.
