Rise in fruit and vegetable imports from Portugal to Spain

Portugal is the second largest supplier to the Spanish import market, second only to France.
According to data from the Customs and Excise Department, Spanish imports from Portugal have experienced an 84% growth in the last five years, reaching 359.5 million euros in value and a total of 340,007 tonnes in volume.
In the case of vegetables, Spanish imports from Portugal between 2019 and 2023 have increased by 103%, reaching 160 million euros. Tomato and potato top the list of most imported products in value, with 77 million euros for tomato (an increase of 109%) and 21 million euros for potato (an increase of 63%).
In terms of volume, vegetable imports from Portugal have grown by 19%, reaching a total of 200,413 tonnes. Of these, 82,797 tonnes correspond to tomatoes (an increase of 20%) and 53,749 tonnes to potatoes (an increase of 18%).
In the area of fruit, Spanish imports have increased by 71%, reaching 199.5 million euros. Among the most imported fruits are kiwifruit, raspberries, avocados, apples and blueberries. Purchases of kiwi amounted to 44.7 million euros (an increase of 172%), those of raspberry reached 44.6 million euros (an increase of 325%), those of avocado totalled 19.8 million euros (an increase of 134%), those of apple reached 16.4 million euros (an increase of 31%) and those of blueberry reached 12.2 million euros (an increase of 187%).
In terms of volume, Spanish fruit imports from Portugal reached 139,594 tonnes (a slight decrease of 3%). The fruits most imported five years ago, such as oranges and apples, have experienced a decline in volume. Orange has decreased by 62%, with a total of 13,703 tonnes, while apple has dropped by 10%, totalling 29,643 tonnes. However, products such as kiwifruit, raspberries, avocados and blueberries have experienced notable growth in import volume.
