A strong potential for the date of Medina - Saudi Arabia
FJ
Saudi Arabia produces around 12% of the world's date production and through various initiatives to support and develop palm trees, dates and agricultural innovation, the country is pursuing the goal of increasing its production volume and volume export.
In Saudi Arabia the agricultural sector represents only 3% of the national economy. Dates are a key crop in the country where the planting of date palms represents 82% of the Kingdom's fruit crops. With around 1 million tonnes of date palm products, Saudi Arabia is in the TOP 5 of world producers. The total number of palm trees in Saudi Arabia is around 28.5 million trees spread over 145,000 hectares mainly in the regions of Riyadh (24%), Al-Qassim (24%), Al-Madinah (16%),, and the Eastern region (13%).
Saudi Arabi produces more than 400 types of dates but less than 10 types account for over 70% of the total production. The main types are the Alk-Khalas of the Eastern region (26% market share), followed by Alsukkary from Al-Qassim (15% market share) and Al-Madinah Berni, Agwa, Berhi and Rothana (13% market share).
The region of Al-Madinah is the 3rd main center of date palm in the country and produces more than 180,000 tons of dates each year. The total number of palm trees in the Al-madinah region is around 4.6 million covering 18,000 hectares, mainly concentrated in Al-Madinah Al-Monawwara, Al-Ola, and Khaybar. With over 300 types of dates produced in the region, Al-Madinah dates, especially of the Agwa type are the most famous and requested by Muslims around the world.
Saudi Arabia has attached great importance to its agricultural sector in recent years. With the program for a sustainable development of agriculture and rural areas 2018-2025 and the national initiative Nusaned aiming to support and develop palms, dates and agricultural innovation, as well as to strengten cooperation between public and private sectors, and in accordance with the objectives of Vision 2030, the program aims to make the Kingdom the leading date exporter in the world.
