Currently 80% of Chilean citrus exports go to the United States. A first shipment has just been made to the Chinese market.
During the last week of May, a cargo of 23 tonnes of clementines left for the port of Shanghai. This new market will allow the diversification of markets for Chilean citrus fruits, since currently 80% of shipments are destined for the United States.
It is difficult to anticipate export volumes to this new market, but according to Comité de Cítricos de Chile-Asoex it could reach just under 10% of the volume available.
For the Committee of Cítricos de Chile-Asoex China is a destination where there is a potential for all citrus fruits. In particular oranges and tangerines, the citrus fruits preferred by Chinese consumers.
China, during the 2019 season, imported from the southern hemisphere nearly 328,000 tonnes of citrus fruits including 51% oranges, 36% mandarins, 12% grapefruits and 1% lemons.
