Pakistan plans to quadruple banana production

Promising results for the new banana varieties resulting from the research program. Varieties that will target the international market for export.

 

During an interview with a local media, Dr. Alam Riaz, Head of Fruits at PARC (Pakistan Agriculture Research Council) clarified that the country, from Chinese plants imported in 2009, produced 12 different varieties of bananas. . The national research program has identified 2 varieties (NIGAB 1, NIGAB 2) which have provided very promising results.

 

These new varieties will be intended for production for export. Large-scale cultivation will make it possible to rapidly develop production and thus contribute to increasing the country's income.

 

According to Dr. Alam Riaz, the country produces about 150,000 tons of bananas per year but in the coming years the production of bananas could reach 700,000 tons.
