This new rail link will reduce CO2 emissions by 70 to 90% compared to road transport.
Called CoolRail, this new temperature-controlled rail link transports fresh produce between Valencia (Spain) and Rotterdam (Netherlands). The capacity is 42 containers and the frequency is 3 times a week. Compared to road transport, this rail link reduces CO2 emissions by 70 to 90%.
CoolRail is an initiative of Euro Pool System, a provider of logistics services and reusable standard packaging. Actors from the retail, logistics and fruit and vegetable sectors are also involved in this sustainable initiative. CoolRail will save 22 million kilometers of road transport and reduce CO2 emissions by 15,000 tonnes per year.
The service started on May 6th, 42 containers are moving between the stations, at a frequency of 3 times a week and for 48 weeks in the year.
Spain is North West Europe's main trading partner for imports of fresh fruits and vegetables such as lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and oranges.
This Valencia-Rotterdam route is the beginning of a network. The intention is to develop the initiative and to create CoolRail rail links to Germany, Scandinavia and the United Kingdom.
