This recognition is essential for the commercialization of avocados in both national and international markets.
Mixtlán, Jalisco, has been recognized as a “regulated avocado pest-free zone,” joining the 18 Jalisco municipalities with this certification granted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
This recognition is essential for the commercialization of avocados in both national and international markets. The Agri-Food Health, Safety and Quality Agency (ASICA Jalisco) played a key role in this process, carrying out inspections and training farmers in phytosanitary issues.
Among the pests that have been eradicated in these municipalities are the large and small pit borer, the trunk and branch borer, and the avocado pit borer moth.
The certification includes other municipalities in Nayarit and the State of Mexico, in addition to those in Jalisco certified in 2023 and 2022. Thanks to this effort, since July 2022, the United States has allowed the importation of Jalisco avocados.
In 2024, approximately 55,000 tons were exported to that market. Total avocado production in Jalisco in 2023 exceeded 323,000 tons, reflecting its importance to the local economy.
