In Spain, the FEPEX Stone Fruit Committee held a telephone meeting to analyze the start of the season in the main producing regions.
The Committee noted an advance of 15 days in the earliest regions such as Andalucía, which forecasts a 15 to 20% drop in production, while the Murcia and Extremadura regions will start harvesting in the middle of this month, the season will extend until September in the later regions Aragón, Rioja, Cataluña.
For the Andalucía region, the production of peaches and nectarines is forecast at 40 million kilos (49 million kilos in 2019). The season is about 2 weeks ahead of last year. Most of the harvest will take place in the second half of May.
For the Murcia region, the season is normal and large quantities are expected from April 25. The region forecasts harvests of 80,000 to 90,000 tonnes of paraguayo, flat fishing, 70,000 to 80,000 tonnes of nectarines, 30,000 tonnes of peaches and 30,000 tonnes of apricots.
For the Extremadura region, the season is normal. As far as volumes are concerned, it is a bit early. As for the Aragón, Rioja, Cataluña regions. Most of the sales of peaches and nectarines will take place from June.
Spanish exports of stone fruits (peach, nectarine, plum, cherry) for the 2019 season amounted to 1.04 million tonnes, 9.4% more than in 2018 and to 1.086 million euros ( -1.5%), according to data from the customs department, processed by FEPEX.
