Davao durian strengthens market in China

The increased export activity reflects China’s sustained interest in Philippine durian, with most outbound volume destined for the Chinese market.
Shipments of durian from Davao to China have continued to increase, with both fresh and frozen fruit being exported in growing quantities. Recent cargoes sent at the end of October included several tons of Puyat and Cob varieties, moved by air to buyers in Guangdong.
Data shared during a facility visit in Barangay Ula showed that from January to October 2025, more than 451,000 kilograms of fresh durian were exported, alongside over 325,000 kilograms of frozen durian. Additional frozen shipments from another processing line accounted for around 183,000 kilograms more. One recent frozen consignment exceeded 54,000 kilograms, sold in multiple product grades.
Inside the processing plant, fruit is sorted into quality classes. Higher-grade durian is cleaned, dried, inspected, and packed for export, while fruit outside the top grade is directed to processing lines for freezing or paste production. Only durians harvested within a few days are accepted for fresh export to avoid spoilage.
Workers also noted that varieties differ in shelf life, with Puyat keeping longer than mixed-variety fruit, which requires faster handling. The facility adjusts its workforce between peak and off-season, with more workers needed during heavy harvest periods.
Regular weekly shipment volumes currently range between 25,000 and 30,000 kilograms, depending on supply and export demand.
