The mangosteen and 7 other products are part of the plan for the development of new productive activities.
In Costa Rica, diversification of production to develop new crops with high potential presents some difficulties.
In its plan for the development of new productive activities and marketing opportunities, the government has placed several products (pitahaya, guanabana, passion fruit ...) including the mangosteen.
But the production of mangosteen presents difficulties. The first harvest occurs 8 years after planting according to local producers. In Panama 6 years old and in Colombia between 7 and 9 years old. During this period, the farmer has no income and must continue to invest in tree care.
These difficulties explain the lack of growth of mangosteen crops in the country. Professionals believe that a support program and special credits are necessary for the development of production.
