At the height of the health crisis, Italians had increased their consumption of fruits and vegetables. But this improvement was short-lived, because according to data for the year 2021, the volume and value of purchases fell.
According to GFK data, processed by CSO Italy in its Market Observatory, in 2021 Italian families consumed less fruit and vegetables. The volume purchased reached 5.9 million tonnes, i.e. -3% compared to 2020 and the value 11.8 billion euros, i.e. -2% compared to 2020.
In 2021 Italian families bought just over 3 million tonnes of fruit (-4%) and around 2.8 million tonnes of vegetables (-3%).
The average expenditure per family has decreased (-2%), going from 466 euros in 2020 to 458 euros in 2021. Per inhabitant, the amount is equal to 199 euros (-1%), of which 102 euros are attributable to the purchase of fruits and 97 euros for the purchase of vegetables.
The study also learns that of the 10 most purchased fruits, 8 fruits saw their demand drop, with the exception of watermelons and melons which maintained the volumes purchased in 2020. Same trend for vegetables, only carrots and courgettes maintained the volumes purchased the previous year.
