Will French witloof disappear from supermarket shelves?
French witloof producers believe their crop may disappear from supermarket shelves in a not so distant future.
They report that the vegetable which was, several years ago, sold at prices reaching highs at 17 French Francs or 2€60 a kilo must now remain under 1€, and even go as low as 0.80€ a kilo. These prices, report producers, are harldy enough to keep the companies running with the ever-increasing prices of petrol, as well as the costs of packing, and life in general.
This is of course not taking into account the low level of consumption (apparently due to its reputation as a bitter vegetable), and the year long, ever increasing sales of 4th range salads.
