Contrast between production intended for export and that intended for the local market. Grape production grew by + 16.2% while total agricultural production fell by 0.9% in the Ica region.
The total agricultural production of the Ica region fell by 0.9% between January and December according to official data, but 4 products (grapes, asparagus, mandarins, avocados) recorded an increase in volumes.
For the ICA region agricultural activity is essential for economic development. For this year according to data from BCR (Banco Central de Reserva) the total agricultural production of the region registered a decrease of 0.9% between January and September. But the foreign market and the local market have different results.
As regards agricultural production intended for export, it maintained until September a result almost identical to the same period of 2019, with a slight growth of 0.1%.
Due to foreign demand, 4 products stand out. Grapes recorded increased production between January and September with a total of 213,030 tons, or + 16.2% compared to 2019. Asparagus reached a production of 136,576 tons, or + 5.2% compared to 2019. Mandarins 179,059 tonnes, or + 8.8%, and avocado 80,660 tonnes, or + 12.7%.
According to the BCR, production intended for the local market had an influence, with a contraction of 8.3%, explained by low producer prices. With 104,652 tonnes produced, potatoes are down 6.9% but they are still the most produced product for the local market. Pumpkin production fell 67.8% to a total of 13,294 tonnes.
The Ica region ships an average of $ 1,200 million worth of agricultural products, of which $ 750 million are fruit exports.
