Exports decline due to E.coli crisis

In June the value of Spanish exports of fruit and vegetables fell by 10% compared to the same month last year. Exports were down to €589.5 million, mainly due to the alarm in Europe caused by the bacterium E. coli.
The largest decline occurred in the vegetables which fell by 17% in June to €130.7 million. Some varieties have experienced significant declines: tomatoes 47% (€18 million), cabbages 32% (€9.6 million), cucumbers 56% (€1.8 million). The value of fruit exports fell by 7.6% to € 458.8 million.
However, from January to June 2011, exports of fruits and vegetables increased by 16% by volume and 3.7% in value, totalling 5.6 million tons and € 4,957,000.
