In the United States, during the 1st quarter of 2021, sales of organic fruits and vegetables exceeded $2.2 billion, or + 9.3% compared to the 1st quarter of 2020 (Photo: supermarketnews.com).
The United States market, the world's largest market for organic products, remains dynamic. For the 1st quarter of 2021, sales of organic fruit and vegetables increased by + 9.3% in value and + 5.7% in volume, while conventional products varied by + 2.9% in value and - 0.6% by volume.
According to OPN (Organic Produce Network) data, during the 1st quarter of 2021, total sales of organic fresh fruits and vegetables exceeded $2.2 billion, or + 9.3% compared to the same period in 2020. The increase in volumes sold reached + 5.7%.
Retail sales of organic fruits and vegetables increased due to the closures of the HoReCA sector, and exceeded sales of conventional products which varied by + 2.9% in value and -0.6% in volume.
In terms of value, packaged salads recorded an increase of + 9.5%, representing 17% of total sales of organic products. Another flagship product, berries, which recorded an increase in value of + 8.8%, representing 15% of total sales of organic products.
In terms of volume, bananas, carrots and apples are the main drivers of retail quantities, together accounting for 37% of the total volume of organic products.
According to the study, 3 categories (packaged salads, berries, fresh herbs) accounted for 46% of the total growth in value. The best performance gains in value came from fresh herbs (+ 28.2%), lettuce (+ 34.7%) and tomatoes (+ 14.7%). By volume, only 10 products, accounted for 72% of the total volume of organic products sold.
