Scarce Quantity of Lettuce in Spring in Polish Market
Poland
Monday 23 April 2007
In the market of fresh vegetables - after "hectic" purchases that lasted before Easter and high prices ( mainly of lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers) - the market presently calmed down. Local lettuce in horticulture cooperatives before Easter and presently reaches record price (0,48 euro/kg) it is about 20% more expensive than last year. The price of imported lettuce reached 0,65 euro/kg. Import of majority of vegetables this year stays behind the needs of customers and that is the reason of the advance in prices. In addition, the costs of production of local vegetables - due to higher price of fuel - also go up.
